In Soviet Russia, Questions Answer YOU!

Простейший Спутник-1, ("Elementary Satellite 1" in English, or commonly Sputnik) was launched 59 years ago, today.  It was 83.6 kg (183.4 lbs) and about the size of a basketball.  It was in orbit until January of 1958 and sparked the US/Soviet "Space Race."

The Soviets saw they had a hit on their hands, and quickly rushed a sequel into production.

Sputnik 2 launched into space on November 3, 1957, with the Canine Cosmonaut, Laika.  She did not survive the trip.

TONIGHT'S Q:
The Yanks didn't catch up until early 1958.

What was the name of the US's first satellite?

Answer IN PERSON, after 7:50.
