Tuesday Trivia and Costume Contest TONIGHT! 10/29 (Also, a Thai last week!)

70 Team Newcomers (7710)
70 Plastic The Lathering (7629)
48 Shiny (7675)
39 Beardsly (7740)
37 Canoe Paddlers (7630)
27 e equals MC AWESOME (7638)

GREAT GAME LAST WEEK!

TEAM NEWCOMERS finished at the top for the first time, in a tie with PLASTIC THE LATHERING! Renée on T.N. brought her son along, and she got to show him a victory!  Congratulations! (Also, Renée - forward this to him?  He gave me his email, and I must have eaten it. Apologies.)

I'm not going to give a play by play, except to say hello to BRAND NEW team Beardsly.  They finished fourth, which is not too shabby, especially considering that they could have been in the top three if Captain Carl and Tim would have just shut up and listened to Sherry. (Hope I got everyone's names right, all I have is Carl's for sure. Happy Birthday Sherry!)

There were a few candidates for Answer of The Week, but to quote Clancy Brown, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

Original question: "What four-word sweet-sounding idiom refers to something good that is added to another good thing?"

The officially correct answer was "icing on the cake."

COSTUME CONTEST TONIGHT!
It's near Halloween.
Dress up!  There are prizes!

8:00 pm
On Tap @ The Harbor

PRIZES FOR:
Best Costume!
Worst Costume!
Special Judge's Choice Category! (aka: "It made me laugh, allright?")
Participation (aka: You made ANY attempt at a costume, no matter how half-assed.)

(Personally, I'm a little blue, because I am uncertain of my costume. It's the principle of the thing, but I'm sure I'll cook up something. That's CERTAINLY not a hint to my costume at all, but you can email me your best guess. That link is not my costume either, but I thought it would be of interest to our audience.)

TUESDAY QUIZ -
Answer these 5 questions.
Take the first letters of your answers, and arrange them to form a word.
Tell me that word, IN PERSON, tonight, after 7:30 pm at On Tap on the Harbor to win a prize.

A. Also known as the WORST candy, (NO it's NOT Circus Peanuts - those are delicious!) this confectionery was first produced in 1921 by Fred W. Amend. Nabisco bought the company in 1970, and waited until 1986 to sell this brand to Leaf.  Leaf passed it on to Hershey in 1996, and Farley & Sathers bought them in 2002.  What horrible candy is it? (okay, maybe not the worst, but definitely a grandma candy)

B. Originally produced in the 1930-40s, this horrible candy was marketed as an appetite-suppressant (the active ingredient was originally benzocaine and then changed to a MUCH HEALTHIER ingredient) but finally left the market in the 1980s when its name was confused with a horrible disease, ironically also known for its slimming effects. What was this candy?

C. What is the freaky taffylike substance found in  3 Musketeers, Mars, Snickers, Milky Way, and ZERO bars ?

D. Also known as "the last thing left in the trick-or-treat bag, along with a Zagnut" this lollipop brand (sucker for you native Ohioans) was introduced by the Akron Candy Company in 1924, and comes in such great flavors such as Root Beer, Peach-Mango and "Mystery".

E. What confectionery features strongly contrasting flavors, with a particularly bitter chocolate coating around a minty sugar center, and is advertised with the tagline ""Get the Sensation!" ?

Miss Steak, Quizzes, Scores, Rob Core and More

MERCIFUL KRISHNA YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE I KEEP SCORE MORE CAREFULLY!

I love to start things off with an apology.
If I am not making stupid mistakes, it means I have stopped caring.
That said, I must care a whole bunch about veteran team Plastic the Lathering and returning once and future regulars Team Newcomers.

You see, I must care because I made a mistake, you see? ( Circular Logic - it's what keeps me rollin'.)

I misentered the final wager from Plastic the Lathering.  By doing that, I mistakenly had them in second place, JUST ahead of Team Newcomers, who came in third. If I had entered their wager correctly, their final rankings would have switched - Newcomers would have taken home $20 and Plastic would earn $10.

SO - My mistake.  I'll fix it.

Team Newcomers - I'll make sure you are given the difference next week at On Tap.

Plastic the Lathering - This is on me.  You did everything fine, and should not be penalized for my issues.

Here's the scores for last week (digits AFTER the team name is your official league number):
67   Plastic The Lathering (7629)
72   Shiny                 (7675)
66   Team Newcomers        (7710)
57   e equals MC AWESOME   (7638)
6    ANJ                   (7709)
60   Canoe Paddlers        (7630)

You'll see newbies ANJ had about 1/10th the total of everyone else. No, they were not horrible, they were brand new, and had to leave early. Team Captain "A" said she was sorry about that and promised to come back this week and bring the "J" with her. I am trying to find some alphabetical joke to type here, but I am failing to think of one. Don't laugh at them yet.

Wait for them to come back, THEN mock them once they are competing.

SO MANDATORY REMINDER
Trivia Tuesday
On Tap, at the Harbor 8pm

THIS WEEKS SECRET QUIZ
What 1950's Western Film was based on a story by the late Elmore Leonard, and remade in 2007 with Batman and a Gladiator?

PRE-QUIZ Quiz:

The original "Highway to the West" was a 2000 mile east-west wheeled wagon route that started in Missouri (Stow, Ohio's claims non-withstanding) and was later immortalized in one of the greatest educational video games.  What is it called?

Tell me your answer IN PERSON on Tuesday, after 7:30.  First correct answer gets a free drink!

2013-10-08 Quiz - On Tap @ the Harbor - Results and more!

GREAT GAME EVERYBODY!

Shiny                 71
Canoe Paddlers        69
Plastic the Lathering 57
The Rum Runners       52
e=MC Awesome          42
60/40Split/Trav Ding. 12

I want to try to get these out closer to the actual quiz night, but I got slammed at work the next day, and when I got home, I just wanted to sleep.  I'm trying to catch up.

I was glad to see two teams (The Canoe Paddlers and Plastic the Lathering) return from our inaugural show last week!  My heart was also warmed by the return of two veteran teams (Shiny and e=MC Awesome) from our previous incarnation.  Seriously, I am thrilled  to see so many familiar faces come back.

Ahoy! and Welcome Aboard!
Team Rum Runners had their first experience with Quiz Night at On Tap. They seemed skeptical about the whole affair at first, but they had a good time anyway.  (At least I hope they did. They came in on a boat for a round of drinks and wound up staying for the whole shebang.)  They wound up coming in fourth, and would have placed second, had it not been for an unfortunate miss in the final round. (I am a little sad they didn't go with their original team name, suggested by co-captain Steve.)

Which brings me to the results and color commentary.
New/old team Shiny won with a strong showing at 71 points.
The Canoe Paddlers  snuck in to second with some serious strategery – they bet zero at the end, and thus had literally nothing to lose. They could have handed me a sheet with “buck futter” on it and done just fine.
PTL took home third place

e=MC Awesome also attended, and handed in some answers.
(This was not one of their better games.)

The Candy Professor's Book - Out soon!

Remember the Candy Professor?

Also known as Dr. Samira Kawash from Rutgers, she was a big help in my pursuit of the truth in the case of Admiral Byrd's Quest for Necco.

Well, her new book, Candy: A Century of Panic and Pleasure comes out next week.

I told her I would make sure to mention it to my almost dozens of readers, and I am fulfilling that promise.

I have not read the full volume, but have have read some excerpts.

It's pretty. . .

(dons sunglasses). . .

sweet.

AND WE'RE OFF! Results from last week, plus new show tomorrow (Tuesday at On Tap @ The Harbor!)

Last week had a great turnout for our inaugural session at On Tap @ the Harbor!

We had a total of five teams playing:

Plastic The Lathering

Canoe Paddlers

Monkey Wrenches

Travelling Dingleberries

Jack Mehoff

Top honors went to Plastic The Lathering.

The Canoe Paddlers came in second, followed closely by BRAND NEW TEAM Monkey Wrenches.

Thanks to EVERYONE who came out!

LEAGUE PLAY UPDATE – I submitted scores last week, but they are not all entered.

I have emailed my Trivial Overlords at Last Call USA, and they are working on the problem.

You can check HERE to see if scores are posted.

I took the liberty of enrolling some of our veteran teams, so you may already be registered!

HINT REMINDER – You should check the Last Call USA website every Monday.

If you go HERE, you can see the weekly hints.

REMEMBER: Look at the TRIVIA hints, not the Name that Tune hints.

LAST CALL NEEDS YOUR HELP TO AWESOMEIFY OUR NEW GAME!

Last Call is working on a new game.  It’s different from the regular quiz – instead of knowing insanely obscure facts, you’ll need to know what “everybody knows.” You’ll be asked about what the most popular answers are to everyday simple questions.

(You may see that there is a passing resemblance to a popular televised programme from one of the tube’s Golden Ages. Total coincidence!)

If you want to help create the game, you can visit our new site playlastcallfeud.com and answer the exact survey questions that will be used in the game.

We don’t have any bars signed up for this game yet, but stay tuned for more details!

FUN  (?) STUFF:

A.) I put a quiz in this newsletter every week.

Sometimes it’s one question, sometimes several.

You can always check the blog the day of the show to see the quiz if miss the email.

This week, it’s at the bottom of this page.

There is always a prize.  It is seldom a good prize.

To win – Be the first person to tell me the correct answer IN PERSON any time AFTER 7:30pm.

(This week is a little different, see below for more details.)

B.) I also put a slightly easier question on the facebook page for On Tap @ The Harbor.

I post mine usually on Mondays.
They usually re-post it under their official feed/timeline/thingy

later that day, or on Tuesday. Check it out.

To win – Be the first person to tell me the correct answer IN PERSON any time AFTER 7:30pm.

This week’s quiz has 6 questions.

If you take the first letter of each answer and arrange them in a certain order, they will form a word.

What is the word?

The questions are:

a.) Fans of the Cuyahoga Falls/Akron/Kent band Devo often refer to themselves by what potatonic nickname?

b.) What indoor games includes these trick shots: a “cracker” defined as “a simultaneous knock-off and squop,” and a “crud” defined as “a forceful shot whose purpose is to destroy a pile completely” ?

c.) What is the only planet in our solar system bears the name of a diety from Greek mythology?

d.) From the greek word that means “Open Sea” what nautical term refers to the zone of water that is neither close to the bottom, nor near to shore?

e.) What 1875 poem is the origin of the phrases “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.” and “bloody, but unbowed” ?

f.) What canine species is thought to have hunted the Tazmanian Devil to extinction on the Austrian mainland?

See you tomorrow.
