It's all in the timing.

Hey all,

Remember a long time ago, when I wrote about how the song "Happy Birthday" was still technically under copyright?

Looks like I spoke (typed?) too soon.

The TL/DR version:

Warner Music never actually had copyright on "Happy Birthday", and the sisters may have not actually had it to begin with.  Doesn't necessarily mean that it's in the public domain, and it could be an orphan work.
NO word on whether Warner will refund the millions they have collected in royalties.

QUIZ:
In related news, the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that a fictional vehicle could be covered by copyright, as if it were a character.  What is that vehicle?

Happy Recent Berfday To ME!

You may not have realized this, but "Happy Birthday" is still technically under copyright.

OR IS IT?

Thanks to some diligence and plain old research (have I explained how archivists and librarians are my heroes?) there may be some evidence that Mildred and Patty Hill never really had a valid copyright claim to the song at all.

You can read more about it here and here.

AT LAST WE WILL SUBVERT AND OVERTHROW THE DOMINANT NATAL-ANNIVERSARIAL-MUSICO-COMPLEX!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE PEOPLE.

There are also several Bananapants sites explaining that celebrating birthdays are sinful:
here
here
here
and here (bonus points to this one with tying in with Anton LaVey).

I bring all of this up for no particular reason at all.

QUIZ:
Celebrated horror author Stephen King celebrated a birthday this week.
With what famous author (and SF genre creator) does he share a birthday?

House of Trivia - In 2-D!

Twitter seems to be ephemeral, by design.

(Note, I am on twitter, but it's mainly mentions of the new blog post, and retweeting comedians, podcasters and SJWs whose work I enjoy. No need to follow me.  Honest.)

I just learned that the Library of Congress is archiving all of Twitter.

Every last #$%@! tweet.

Imagine a bottomless hole, filled with jokes, venom and cat-pictures - FOREVER!

QUIZ:

In 1953 The House of Wax, the first color 3-D movie from a major studio premiered.
The very first commercial 3-D film premiered in 1922 and shares a title with what song by Huey Lewis and the News?

Unicorned Beef Hash - Trivia Tonight!

More doom and nonsense in the news, so here's a round of unicorn chasers.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson saves puppy from untimely death by drowning.

Because, of course he did.

2.
Upside of climate change?  Grizzly bears gettin' it on with polar bears.
The kids are called "pizzlies."
(Yes, I read the article and realize that the offspring are sterile, and a horrible threat to biodiversity.  But the mental image is just so great.)

3.
John C. Reilly and his childhood friends once stole 500 boxes of  Sugar Corn Pops.

QUIZ: Although MLPFIM uses this as a term for a winged-unicorn, what word originally referred to a unicorn horn, typically separated from its original host?

What Did The Goat See? - Trivia Tonight!

Have you ever looked into the dead, soulless eyes of a goat, imagining them as a sign of humanity's existential tortured loneliness?

Uhhhhhhh. . . . me neither.

But apparently, earlier this month, scientists published a paper explaining WHY goats have those eyes.  The short version - the odd shape helps them see predators.

wait for it . . . . .

I think this means we're all winners.

QUIZ: In 2002, what horror movie, a remake of a Japanese film, both featuring a cursed videotape was released?
