John Hodgman - Free - TONIGHT!

Hey Triviators,

It's been a while so I thought I'd reach out and say hello.

Hello!

Quick update - it looks as though the lead at the unnamed brewery that rhymes with "Choppin' Log" has fallen through - they are doing enough business that they don't want to pay to bring in more people.  That's fair enough, so no hard feelings.

(If you have a lead of anyplace in Greater Akron/Falls/Fairlawn/etc that might be a good match for Trivia, drop me a line.  I'll make sure the Last Call staff follows up with them.)

In other trivial news, Nerd-Hero John Hodgman will be in town, tonight.
He is speaking, for free, at the Akron Main Library.
The show starts at 7, and doors open at 6:30.

I'd love to turn this into a Triviator meet-up - see Hodgman and maybe grab a drink at Baxters or the Lockview afterward?

I'll be there at about 6-6:15 if anyone wants to go.

If you only know him from the Mac/PC commercials, you owe it to yourself to check him out.

* His complete guide to world knowledge
* His Netflix standup special (tonight is new, different material)
* His hilarious podcast, Judge John Hodgman from maximumfun.org

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh @hodgman A'kronh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

DETAILS ARE HERE.

See you tonight!

Just posting this to let you know that Last Call is still looking for a new spot.

Still Alive

So it goes . . .

All good things must come to an end.

Also, Trivia.

John at On Tap has decided to end Trivia night at On Tap at the Harbor, at least for the summer.
I thank him for the opportunity, and I wish him nothing but the best.
I hope he asks Last Call back in the fall.

Our last show was last Tuesday, June 10.

Look for another Akron-area show in the near future.

Until then, EXCELSIOR!

A Major Award? - Nope. Trivia Tonight - 8pm

So, our host is not thrilled with recent attendance at Tuesday Trivia.

He would like to see the turnout improve.
So would I.
He has decided to eliminate weekly prizes.
(You know, to boost turnout?)

I will appeal to your sense of fun, friendship, good times, trivia and booze in order to keep you coming back.  Is it enough?

That's all I have to offer on the subject.
Here's a timely question for today
What appropriately-named actress was nominated an Oscar for her role in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, a Golden Globe for her role on TV's The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, and was once married to Dudley Moore?

I'll take answers at 7:45 and draw sometime right before we start.

Time is an illusion. Trivia time doubly so. Tuesday at On Tap @ The Harbor - 5/20 - 8pm

Time is an illusion. Trivia time doubly so.

So, because of a (lovely and thoughtful) gift from the folks on Team Plastic, the Lathering, I have been playing a certain collectible card game with my kids.  In addition to causing me to have flashbacks of: sleepless weeks in college, spending more money on cards than beer, and some of the most fun/insane conversations I have ever been in, it got me to thinking about MAGIC!

Or, to put it in a Doug-Henning-esque manner "Illusion!"

There's a decent question posted to the Facebook page for shots, but I needed something great for you today.

Instead you get a card trick.

Here's your magic-based-callback-to-last-weeks-quiz-and-my-followup-question:

What is the Latin name of the religious "how-to" book, written in Germany in 1486, as a way to find and "destroyeth Witches and their heresy as with a two-edged sword?"

Answers after 7:50 tonight.  Correct answers in a drawing from a prize on nominal value.

Bonus if you can tell me why/how it's a callback to last week.

Going to Hardee's in a Handbasket

Going to Hardee's in a Handbasket

So, we have a candidate for the Westernmost Hardee's in the US:

It's at:
320 Euclid Ave

Helena, MT 59601-2852

You can see the Google Streetview here.

FWIW, Carl's Jr. does not seem to have crossed the mighty Mississip.
Carl's Jr. has 4 locations in Vietnam, while Hardee's has 9 locations in Kazakhstan. Niiiiiiice.

Auditory Ossicles

(also the name of my Metal Machine Music-era Lou Reed cover band)

After being so politely schooled by Dottoressa A. (of new team KBA) regarding proper scientific Latinate nomenclature for the earbones, I got into a bit of a linkstorm, and discovered that you can develop ARTHRITIS OF THE EARBONES!  As if my web-nurtured hypochondria needed any more help!
Thanks, Dottoressa A!

As always, more information on auditory ossicles can be found on the internet.

(And, yes, I did read the article and see it's not actually arthritis at all, but a misleading headline in a link that went to a Turkish/EU medical site led me to think it was for a moment.)

That's all for now.

Excelsior!

The First Woman Who Did What? Tuesday Trivia 8pm On Tap at The Harbor

This week, while looking up something or other, I came across several articles on Amelia Earhart, many focusing on exactly where her plane landed/crashed, and possibly finding her remains, possibly moved by crabs, and clues provided by her anti-freckle medication!

(It only seems as if the search for Flight 370 has been going on as long.)

One of the comments in one of these articles made me think of Earhart, Lindbergh and other famous firsts - not just aviation, but in exploration, achievement, technology and more.  We remember Amelia Earhart, not only because of her remarkable achievements, but also because of the mystery and romance of her disappearance. Lindbergh was the most famous person on the planet after his flight, but I am sure his son's kidnapping, his ummmm, interesting thoughts on race and entering WWII may have added some extra reasons to remember him.

So, in 1937 Amelia Earhart failed in her attempt to fly around the world.
Twenty-seven years later, a woman from Ohio actually achieved this.
We seem to have forgotten about her.

Who is she?

(Also, that's the question of the week, if you didn't catch that.  Tell me in person, after 7:40 for a prize.)
