Celebrate Juneteenth with Trivia @Barmacy!

* * * Remember, we start @ 8pm * * *

So, there's lots of historically significant things that happened on this day.

Porcine orange feline Garfield made his comic strip debut in 1978.
It's Zoe Saldana, Paula Abdul and Salman Rushdie's birthday.

It's also Juneteenth.

You can follow the links here, but the TL/DR version is that it's the celebration of the day (June 19, 1865) that General Gordon Granger publicly read his General Order No. 3. Read the links.

Lee had surrendered to Grant on April 9, and Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, two months before General Granger made his announcement.

Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, to take effect Jan 1, 1863.

The Thirteenth Amendment, finally killing slavery, wasn't officially approved until December of 1865.

You are probably aware of the continuing horror show in the news.

If you would like to do something about it, a good first step is to contact some people who may be able to do something about it.

It's my zipcode in the link, but you can add your own address for correct information.

It's five minutes out of your day, and could have some impact.
When I called Sen. Portman's office, I was told:
  1. The Senator opposes separating families.
  2. He is speaking out about it.
  3. He is looking at any legislation that is being brought up.
There was no firm commitment to concrete action, but it's a first step.
I need to do more.

Please help the US in 2018 from being uttered in the same breath as Germany in 1938.
